Social Network Approaches to Recruitment, HIV Prevention, Medical Care, and Medication Adherence, Carl A. Latkin, et al., Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes (2013)

This article examines opportunities for recruitment, intervention, and research using social networks (including those online via social media) and network analysis as tools for HIV risk behavior change. Risk behaviors are linked to social networks and using these networks may provide a sustainable and cost-effective method of assessing behavior change, especially among populations that are difficult to reach. The authors examine the potential benefits, challenges, and ethical implications of using social networks in the implementation of research and interventions. The authors note that social network approaches function as another tool for community-wide prevention efforts because they complement, rather than replace, structural and individual interventions.
