On June 13, 2014, the Iowa Supreme Court set aside the conviction of Nick Rhoades, a man living with HIV who was initially sentenced to 25 years in prison, with required registration as a sex offender, after having a one-time sexual encounter with another man during which they used a condom. The Center for HIV Law and Policy filed a friend-of-the-court (amicus) brief in this case.
The Center for HIV Law and Policy challenges barriers to the rights and health of people affected by HIV through legal advocacy, high-impact policy initiatives, and creation of cross-issue partnerships, networks, and resources. We support movement building that amplifies the power of individuals and communities to mobilize for change that is rooted in racial, gender, and economic justice.
