Carter v. Broward County Sheriff’s Department Medical Department et al, Judicial Decision, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, 2014

This is a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in a case filed by an HIV positive prison inmate in Florida against the Broward County sheriff’s department and jail physician, alleging deliberate indifference to his medical needs by discontinuing his high-calorie/high-protein diet. The district court denied the prisoner leave to amend his complaint to add defendants, and granted summary judgment in the defendants’ favor. The prisoner appealed. The appellate court ruled that the district court had not abused its discretion in denying the plaintiff leave to amend his complaint.
