UN NGO Committee on HIV/AIDS to Hold Panel on HIV Stigma and Discrimination During UN Commission on Social Development (2013)

The United Nations NGO Committee on HIV/AIDS will hold a panel discussion on HIV-related issues during the 51st Session of the Commission on Social Development. The event, "Empowering People Living with HIV by Eliminating Stigma and Discrimination" aligns with the Session's priority theme of promoting empowerment by achieving poverty eradication, social integration, and full employment and decent work for all.

Rashida Richardson of The Center for HIV Law and Policy's Positive Justice Project will discuss the implications of HIV-specific laws and policies; Eric Sawyer of UNAIDS will focus on interventions that address stigma and discrimination, such as the People Living with HIV Stigma Index; Michael Ighodaro will share his experience facing discrimination and social exclusion as an HIV positive person in Nigeria; and Lynn Murchison of UNAIDS will discuss advances in the fight to end vertical transmission of HIV. Thomas Brennan of the Salesian Missions will moderate. The panel discussion will take place on Friday, February 15, 2013, 1:15 to 2:45pm, at the United Nations, North Lawn Building, Conference Room E in New York City.
