Queer Liberation March to Reclaim Pride on 50th Anniversary of Stonewall Rebellion (2019)

On Sunday, June 30th, the Reclaim Pride Coalition is holding a Queer Liberation March in New York City. The march will occur on the same day as NYC World Pride/Stonewall 50 and capture the spirit of past and present queer liberation struggles. The march is a grassroots action--a people’s political march with no corporate floats and no police involvement--to highlight the social and political battles that continue to be fought and to shine a light on the most marginalized members of the queer community.

In addition to marching against the exploitation of the queer community for profit, the march aims to honor the radical legacy of Pride and the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion:

“The Stonewall rebellion must be understood in a wider history of Queer rebellion against state violence and institutional discrimination overtaking the U.S. during the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. These early rebellions emerged in the context of counter-cultural movements, during which many organizations were formed in coalition and solidarity with other people’s struggles across the country and around the globe such as Black liberation movements and the movement against the war in Vietnam. Their mission statements were inherently intersectional.”

Kicking off at 9:30am, the march will retrace the steps of the original Christopher Street Liberation Day March of 1970, gathering in Sheridan Square, marching up 6th Avenue, and ending with a rally in Central Park's Great Lawn from 1-3pm. All are welcome to join the march at any point. It is free, legal and safe, with no pre-registration or wristbands required.
