CHLP Releases Updated Version of Housing Rights of People Living with HIV/AIDS: A Primer (2010)

The Center for HIV Law and Policy (CHLP) has released a new version of Housing Rights of People Living with HIV/AIDS: A Primer. One in a series of primers on legal issues identified as critical by people living with HIV/AIDS and their advocates, this useful publication provides guidance on the laws protecting people with HIV from housing discrimination and ensuring their ability to find safe and stable housing. New to this version is a section on the application of international human rights law to a person with HIV's right to safe, stable, and affordable housing. CHLP maintains that the international human rights framework is an important tool in the fight for fair housing rights because it represents the collective values and goals of the entire world community. Many of the international human rights instruments that call for protection of the housing rights of all persons, including those living with HIV/AIDS, are binding treaties that have been ratified by the United States. Even when the United States has signed but not ratified a specific convention, it is still obligated not to act contrary to that convention's purpose. Housing Rights of People Living with HIV/AIDS: A Primer is an invaluable aid to HIV attorneys and advocates who wish to expand their work on behalf of people with HIV to critical housing issues, and a useful guide to the legal remedies available to secure decent housing for those affected by HIV for anyone interested in the issue.
