CHLP joins Fenway Institute in Comments Addressing Disparities Among Sexual and Gender Minority Patients (2021)

The Center for HIV Law and Policy joined the Fenway Institute at Fenway Health in comments to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as part of the request for public comments on the Draft United States Core Data for Interoperability.

The Fenway comments were endorsed by a coalition of 65 organizations including CHLP that work in health care, LGBTQIA+ equality, sexual and gender minority (SGM) health and HIV prevention and care. The comments advocate for expanded patient demographic requirements that include sexual orientation, gender identity, intersex status, name used, and pronouns.

The availability of data about sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) is useful in identifying and addressing disparities among sexual and gender minority patients, which are an NIH-recognized health disparity group.

The comments were submitted to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and the Office of the Secretary, United States Department of Health and Human Services on April 15, 2021.

The full comments are available at fenwayhealth.org.
