38th National Conference on Social Work and HIV/AIDS
CHLP Staff Attorney Sean McCormick will present at the 38th National Conference on Social Work and HIV/AIDS in San Antonio, Texas, on Thursday, May 21.
Understanding and Reducing the Threat of HIV Criminalization and other Carceral Tactics within Social Work
Social work professionals can reduce or eliminate the threat of HIV criminalization by supporting PLHIV accused of crimes, educating PLHIV on ways to protect themselves from criminalization, and advocating for the repeal or reform of these laws. The session will begin with an introduction to the origins and scope of HIV criminalization and continue with a deeper examination of the role of social workers addressing HIV criminalization through direct services and coalition-based policy advocacy. The presentation will include a moderated discussion, driven by audience questions, and will provide practical skills, resources, and networks to support implementation in attendees' home settings.
