Washington State Advocates Succeed in Reforming State’s HIV Criminal Law

UPDATE: Washington State Governor Jay Inslee signed HB 1551 into law on Thursday, March 19, 2020. (Click for video.)

On Tuesday, March 3, 2020, in a well-earned victory for advocates in Washington State, the Senate passed a bill that reformed the state’s HIV criminalization law. Governor Jay Inslee, who supports the bill, is expected to sign it into law.

CHLP recently spoke with The Appeal about HIV criminalization reform efforts in Florida. Top-down movements won't work for the people overrepresented in the enforcement of criminal law -- and that's the case with laws that criminalize disease exposure, too.

Ultimately, we energize and mobilize communities towards action and change with a broad, inclusive movement, with an ambitious goal. This truth doesn't change just because there's a (seemingly) unworkable political majority in your state.

SAFE SEX Workers Study Act Introduced on 16th International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers

Reps. Ro Khanna (CA-17), Barbara Lee (CA-13) and Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Ron Wyden (D-OR), introduced the SAFE SEX Workers Study Act, a bill to require the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to conduct the first national study on the health and safety of sex workers.

CHLP, AIDS United and The Well Project tell the CDC to maintain the right to real notice of and consent to HIV testing

On October 28, 2019, CHLP, AIDS United and The Well Project submitted written comments to express continued support for HIV testing protocols that recognize the vital importance of strong protections of patients’ rights to clear, oral notice of and consent to HIV testing.
