Letter to Michigan Elected Officials Opposing a Proposed Amendment to the Michigan Public Health Code, Positive Justice Project, et al, 2014

Letters and Other Advocacy Documents

The National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable, the HIV Prevention Justice Alliance, the Positive Justice Project (PJP), and more than thirty other national medical, infectious disease, public health and allied organizations, sent a letter to Michigan elected officials opposing a bill to amend sections of the public health code.

Michigan Senate Bill 1130 (SB 1130) would have amended the current HIV felony law by creating new felony penalties for people living with Hepatitis C (HCV) for any kind of sexual penetration with an uninformed partner.

The letter was sent to Governor Rick Snyder, Lt. Governor Brian Calley and leaders of the Michigan State House of Representatives and Senate on December 15, 2014. The legislative proposed was debated in the House Appropriations Committee on December 17, 2014, and no action was taken on SB 1130, effectively killing the bill.
